Linux Foundation Launches OpenTofu: A New Open Source Alternative to Terraform
Yes, I am aware of the recent launch of OpenTofu by the Linux Foundation. It is an open source alternative to the popular infrastructure as code (IaC) tool Terraform. OpenTofu is a response to Terraform's recent license change from the Mozilla Public License v2.0 (MPLv2) to the Business Source License v1.1.
OpenTofu is backed by a number of industry leaders, including Harness, Gruntwork, Spacelift, env0, Scalr, Digger, Terrateam, Massdriver, and Terramate. It has also received formal pledges from over 140 organizations and 600 individuals.
OpenTofu has a starting commitment of a minimum of 18 full-time developers over at least the next five years. This ensures that the project will have the resources it needs to be successful.
The launch of OpenTofu is a significant development in the IaC space. It provides a viable alternative to Terraform for organizations that are concerned about the implications of the new license. It also shows the Linux Foundation's commitment to supporting open source software.
I am excited to see how OpenTofu develops in the coming months and years. I believe it has the potential to become a major player in the IaC market.
